1864-10-13Alms House

Failed attempt by Confederate forces to recover ground taken by the Union near Richmond. Mostly a battle of skirmishes but ending with a failed Federal assault on defences north of Darbytown road.

1862-09-07McClellan's pursuit

In response to Lee's invasion of Maryland (and Northern soil) McClellan begins his lethargic pursuit of the confederate army with 87 troops. He believes he is facing a march larger southern army.

The bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties. This battle is more commonly known in the North as the Battle of Antietam.

1862-09-0255,000 Confederates

Some fifty five thousand confederates, the main body of the army of Northern Virginia, concentrate at Frederick.

1862-09-03Maryland Campaign Begins

Emboldened by success at Second Bull Run, Confederate leaders decided to invade northern soil. Robert E Lee departs Centreville to begin the 'Maryland Campaign' which would effectively end at Antietam.
